Ganga Hospital hosted an exhibition on breast cancer for the month of October which is dedicated to increasing breast cancer awareness. The most common cancer among women is breast cancer, which has excellent outcomes and survival rates when detected early.
Kanakavalli Shanmuganathan, the Chairman and Managing director of Ganga Hospital inaugurated the exhibition.Dr. S Raja Sabapathy, the Chairman of the Division of plastic surgery, Dr Rajasekaran, Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics, Dr Hari Venkatramani the President of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India and Dr. Raja Shanmuga Krishnan were present while inaugurating.
In the exhibition, signs and symptoms of breast cancer are illustrated, along with ways to detect the disease early. These included self-breast examination once a month for those over the age of 18, as well as yearly mammograms, the importance of which is explained in the exhibition. It also tries to break the misconception that chemotherapy is extremely hazardous and poisonous.
There is also a section and a lot of information about surgery for breast cancer. Women were also educated that after breast cancer treatment they could return to their normal selves. Previously breast was removed due to breast cancer. However, nowadays breasts can be reconstructed with tissues from the abdomen bringing women back to their normal lives.
Swelling in the upper limb (Lymphoedema) is common after breast cancer treatment. Prevention and treatment of lymphoedema that occurs after breast cancer is explained in the exhibition.
Ganga Hospital along with the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolis is conducting Project Shakti. In this, a hi-tech bus containing the latest mammograms goes to villages and rural areas and women are screened for breast cancer. If breast cancer is detected in the women who are screened in the camp, the treatment is also done free of cost. 4505 women have been screened in 89 camps and 58 women have been identified and treated for breast cancer free of cost.
The exhibition will be open to the public from 1st October to 31st October and volunteers will explain the various exhibits from 10 AM to 4 PM.
