With the support of PSG Group, and the guidance from Coimbatore Corporation, City-based reputed NGO Siruthuli has begun first phase of the Gandhima Nagar Stream restoration project.
Gandhima Nagar Stream, originating near the Gandhima Nagar Police Station crosses Avinashi road near Fun Mall flows through GV Residency, crosses Trichy road near Uzhavar Sandhai finally joins the Irugur feeder canal. The total length of the stream is 13 Kms.
This stream carries sewage with a flow of 21 million litres per day. This causes heavy stench to the nearby areas especially near Fun Mall and GV Residency.
Siruthuli, a multi award-winning organization known for providing solutions to water and environmental problems in Tamil Nadu began the restoration of Gandhima Nagar Stream on Thursday.
As part of Phase 1, The stretch from Gandhima Nagar Police Station till Sowripalayam road – a length of 3.6 kms will be cleaned, desilted and bund standardised.
Followed by Phase 1, the stretch from Avinashi road till Sowripalayam road – a length of 1.3 km will be fenced along the GV Residency link road for controlling solid waste dumping.
Vetiver will be planted on the bund slopes to support soil reinforcement on either sides on the bund. Native tree plantation will be done on the bund area to improve green cover. Subsequently, the sewage flowing within stream is planned to treat using Phyco-remediation and constructed wetlands methods. This ensures elimination of odor near Fun Mall, PSG IMSR, GV Residency.
