Breast milk is full of nutrients and is a highly valuable food for infants. The first milk a mother secretes for her baby has a golden-yellow color, hence it is called Liquid Gold. The Mothers’ Milk Bank run by Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, Coimbatore has successfully collected, safely pasteurized and provided 31.25 lakh ml. of breast-milk to preterm babies and babies in ICUs in the hospital and also to the ones in hospitals in and around Coimbatore.
Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week (Aug.1-7), the Hospital along with SRIPMS – College of Nursing organized an awareness walkathon and flash mob at Race Course on Tuesday. Coimbatore District Collector Pavan Kumar participated as Chief Guest and flagged off the walkathon along with Sundar Ramakrishnan, Managing Trustee of SNR Sons Charitable Trust.
The walkathon started at Thomas Park and concluded at Sarathambal Temple. The participating students carried placards bearing awareness messages.
Sundar Ramakrishnan emphasized the importance of creating a supportive environment for breastfeeding women in workplaces and in other public places. Dr.Suja Mariam, Neonatologist from Sri Ramakrishna Hospital highlighted the significance of feeding only breast-milk to babies for the first 6 months. She further underlined the long-term benefits that it provides to both mother and child.
