The Go Green Committee and Eco Club of Nirmala College for Women jointly organised a World Ozone Day celebration on Wednesday at the college.

The programme was conducted under the leadership of Chief Patron Kulandai Therese, Secretary, and Patron Mary Fabiola, Principal. The event aimed to create awareness among students and faculty about the importance of protecting the ozone layer, conserving the environment, and promoting sustainable living.

The highlight of the programme was a lecture titled “The Invisible Shield: Protecting Our Planet’s Lifeline”, delivered by Muralidharan, Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Science, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.

He explained the vital role of the ozone layer in protecting life on Earth by absorbing harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. He also discussed the major causes of ozone depletion, the effects of ozone-depleting substances, and global initiatives undertaken to protect and restore the ozone layer.

The session was informative and engaging, helping students gain a better understanding of the importance of safeguarding the atmosphere. The programme concluded with a call to students to adopt eco-friendly practices, reduce activities that contribute to environmental pollution, and actively participate in sustainability initiatives.
