Kumaran Medical Center (KMC) in Kurumbapalayam, Coimbatore, has achieved a medical milestone by successfully performing a complex liver transplant, in which the liver of a 12-year-old brain-dead donor was implanted into a 54-year-old patient suffering from end-stage liver failure.
The highly challenging procedure, which lasted nearly 12 hours, involved transplanting a pediatric liver into an adult—a procedure that requires exceptional surgical precision and multidisciplinary coordination due to anatomical and functional complexities.
The surgery was led by a team of experts, including Dr. Anand Bharathan, Dr. Ramesh, and Dr. Gurusandhiya, along with a dedicated team of liver transplant surgeons, gastroenterologists, anesthesiologists, and intensive care specialists. Their combined expertise ensured the successful completion of the life-saving procedure.
Following the surgery, the patient responded well to treatment, made a full recovery, and was discharged in stable condition.
Speaking on the achievement, Dr. Hariprasad, Chairman of Kumaran Medical Center, said, “This successful transplant reflects our commitment to advanced medical care and our team’s ability to handle highly complex cases. We are proud to have given a second chance at life to the patient.”
Dr. Kavitha, Vice-Chairperson, added that the accomplishment highlights the strength of teamwork and clinical excellence at KMC. She also thanked the donor’s family for their noble decision, which made the life-saving procedure possible.
This case stands as one of the most complex liver transplant surgeries performed at Kumaran Medical Center, further reinforcing its position as a leading centre for advanced organ transplantation in the region.
