The modern lounges introduced by Coimbatore Corporation last year for gig workers is being well-used by food delivery agents in the city.
Developed at Rs.17 lakhs approximately each, these lounges are established at Gandhipuram and RS Puram, and most users of the lounge are positive about the facility. They are able to charge their phones, use the restrooms and respite after continuous deliveries.
When asked a few users, they said that they have not seen women use the facility which was actually deemed “Unisex” during its launch. As more gig-workers add to the workforce, and keeping in mind that lot of women work in the city as delivery agents, corporation and corporates can consider adding 1 or 2 Pink Lounges exclusive to women in the city.
If these lounges come with facilities that will help them rest and feel confident in managing menstruation in a comfortable environment (like disposal bins, private changing areas and other amenities) that will really be of great assistance to women delivery partners, who are rising in the city.
80 lakh gig workers!
Annamalai, Founder of We The Leaders Foundation shared during a recent event in Coimbatore that 80 lakh Indians work as gig workers in India and 33% of them are graduates. Citing Niti Aayog states that at the end of 2031, the number of gig workers in India will be 2.5 crore in the country.
He also shared that when he was in Hyderabad, he ordered food online in the evening, and a woman-delivery agent delivered it. He noted that woman delivery partners work even at 10 p.m., praising their hard-working nature and commitment.
