The Railway Task Force of CII-Coimbatore’s economic & urban development arm ‘Coimbatore NXT’ has urged the Railway Board and Southern Railway to prioritize the development of Coimbatore North Railway Station as a major passenger terminal, in its recent representation.
While welcoming the proposed Podanur Coaching Terminal, the Railway Task Force members emphasized that Coimbatore North’s central location makes it particularly convenient for passengers, especially senior citizens, students, working professionals and daily commuters.
It underlined that railway development must prioritize passenger convenience, accessibility and the city’s future growth, and it pitched Coimbatore North Station after considering its central location, excellent public transport connectivity and availability of railway land for expansion.
While noting that infrastructure improvements, including an additional platform, are underway at the station, it stressed the need for a comprehensive yard remodeling plan, including additional full-length platforms capable of handling 24-coach trains, facilities for originating and terminating trains, and shifting the existing goods shed to a suitable location to reduce city traffic congestion.
It appealed to the Railway Board to prepare a time-bound master plan for transforming Coimbatore North into a modern passenger terminal, complementing Coimbatore Junction and Podanur.
