The 4-cornered junction near Mani High School in Pappanaickenpalayam is soon going to become a safer place for pedestrians, as works to restore the defunct traffic signal have commenced.
For around 2 years, this traffic signal which is installed at the Netaji Road – Katoor Road junction frustrated pedestrians and motorists as it failed to regulate traffic and also ensure safety of pedestrians who cross the road.
This signal used to be an essential infrastructure that facilitated safe passage for hundreds of students of 2 popular schools, thousands of vehicles that use the route and numerous patients, relatives and ambulances also.
Noticing the lack of maintenance and the looming danger, UYIR – an NGO working in the field of road safety and G.Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital have jointly taken up the task to restore this signal with the support of City Police Department.
A source shared that the work is going steadily at the site and the signal will be completely restored in a week’s time, and the traffic signal will be maintained by UYIR post the restoration. There are 50+ traffic signals in Coimbatore City and some of them are in desperate need of restoration and maintenance. UYIR is in plans to revive them in a phased manner.
