Coimbatore Corporation has taken yet another effort to curb open-dumping activities in the city by placing plant-saplings in pots at places where people of certain localities usually dump their waste – be it waste from household or eateries.
Disposing waste in vacant land creates health risks but that has not bothered a few of the city folks in different areas. The corporation has been urging the people to segregate the waste their house/office generates, and hand it over to the Corporation sanitation and conservancy workers daily when they come for door-to-door collections.
While a significant portion of the city has paid heed to the call of the corporation, there are still many who opt to dump it at the time of their choice, which is mostly in the late evenings. Such people usually dump waste at sites where corporation garbage bins were once kept. The local administration is now identifying such places where garbage is dumped in the open, and is covering those places using thick green nets. It is placing plant saplings in pots inside, believing it would deter the public from dumping their waste in these places.
A banner is also placed in the net which directs the people to hand over the waste to the corporation staff who would come to their doorsteps in the mornings. It has also provided phone numbers to report if the garbage collection vehicle or staff did not come to their ward. The QR-code to register complaint in the Namma Kovai app (the official mobile app of Coimbatore Corporation to connect with citizens) is also provided.
Corporation is taking efforts to reduce open dumping. It is time for the city-folks to take up a disciplined approach and help the local administration keep the city cleaner. Also, if we properly segregate the waste as degradable and non-degradable and hand it over to the corp.staff, that would really help the corporation to process the waste easily. This would reduce unsegregated waste from piling up in the Vellalore dumpyard as well.
