MSME industry representatives have expressed concerns over the sudden power cuts taking place in Coimbatore recently.
James, President of the Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Tiny Enterprises (TACT) said via a statement that, frequent and unannounced power disruptions over the past two days in Coimbatore have severely crippled MSME enterprises, causing substantial financial losses and damaging sophisticated machinery.
Highlighting the crisis, James, stated that while the industrial hub had largely remained insulated from widespread power outages seen in other parts of the State, the sudden shift has caught tiny and cottage units off guard.
According to him, several substations in the district have been resorting to tripping power supplies between short intervals, while other substations have imposed continuous power cuts lasting between one to two hours without any prior intimation.
The erratic disruptions have struck micro manufacturers particularly hard. Industry representatives pointed out that most small job-work units now deploy high-end machinery and expensive tooling to execute precision components. Abrupt interruptions midway through an operation cause damage to the product as well as to the machines.
He noted that the cottage and micro sector is already grappling with steep fixed electricity charges. Hence he urged the State government and the TNEB to intervene immediately.
He also hinted that if TNEB fails to regularise power supply, industry associations will be forced to unite and launch protests to safeguard the micro-industrial sector.
