Coimbatore NEXT has requested government authorities to support the plan to build Chennai to Coimbatore Expressway via Salem, as the possible road infrastructure has the potential to reduce both travel distance and time significantly.
CII Coimbatore Chapter launched Coimbatore NEXT initiative in 2022 with the aim to materialize the dreams and vision for the city in 2047, India’s 100th year of Independence. Over the years, Coimbatore NEXT has suggested various plans and proposals that aim at elevating the city in diverse sectors.
As the number of people who travel between Coimbatore and Chennai stand at approximately 46,000 per day (3,000 via flight services; 9,000 via road; 12,000 via bus services and 22,000 via railways), CII via Coimbatore NEXT represented the concerned authorities to increase the flight services, provide additional coaches in trains, permit more bus services and most of all support the plan for developing an expressway that will connect the 2 cities via Salem.
It underlined that the expressway has the potential to reduce the travel distance to 450 kms and cut travel time to 6 hours. It highlighted that a staggering 1.6 crore people travel between the two major Tamil Nadu cities every year, and emphasized that the suggested road infrastructure project can greatly benefit the public.
