The Department of Geography, Nirmala College for Women, organised a one-day symposium on “Geospatial Tools for Climate Action, Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience” on Wednesday as part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations.

The programme was aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 13 (Climate Action), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and 15 (Life on Land).

The inaugural session paid tribute to Edwin, the founder and first Head of the Department.

Principal Mary Fabiola, in her presidential address, emphasised the institution’s commitment to interdisciplinary research and environmental stewardship.

Resource persons included Rajasekaran of ICFRE-IFGTB, who spoke on mapping invasive alien species using MAXENT and MODIS NDVI time series; Pramod of SACON, who addressed climate change and ecosystem health; and Gha. Deebhakaran and Kokilavani of TNAU, who presented village-level climate vulnerability mapping and geospatial applications for climate-smart agriculture.

The symposium highlighted the need to integrate geospatial technologies into climate and disaster risk reduction policies, scale up village-level vulnerability models for adaptation planning, and promote collaboration among geographers, remote sensing scientists, ecologists and agricultural experts.

Students and scholars from Bharathidasan University, Sri Shakti Engineering College, Kumaraguru Engineering College and Government Arts College, Coimbatore, also participated in the event. The programme concluded with a valedictory session and certificate distribution.
