PSG College of Nursing hosted a vital national-level conference titled “Caring Beyond Boundaries: Nursing the Whole Person in Transgender Healthcare” on Tuesday at the PSG IMS&R Auditorium.

The event brought together nursing faculty, educators, registered nurses, and healthcare professionals from across the country to advance inclusive, respectful, and evidence-based care for transgender individuals.

Kalki Subramaniam, a transgender rights activist, graced the event as the chief guest. The conference aimed to equip nursing professionals with the clinical, ethical, and cultural competencies required to support transgender patients effectively. Throughout the day, multidisciplinary sessions covered crucial areas such as gender diversity, hormonal and surgical transition care, psychosocial well-being, legal rights, and protection against abuse.

Jeyadeepa, Principal of PSG College of Nursing and Chairperson of the conference, opened the technical sessions by discussing gender diversity in clinical practice.

Notable speakers included Dr. Kripa Angeline from Puducherry, who addressed medical and mental health issues; plastic surgeons Dr. Kovarthini and Dr. Meghana Bagalkotkar, who shared insights on gender-affirming medical and surgical transitions; and Dr. Suba Sooria from Manipal, who spoke on perioperative nursing excellence.

The afternoon sessions focused on psychosocial and legal frameworks, with expert talks by Dr. Kanchana from Chennai, Dr. Sudha Ramalingam of PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Dr. Supriya from Rajasthan, and Prof. Chitra from Coimbatore.

The program concluded with a powerful session on safety and protective nursing practice by Dr. Manoharan, District Police Surgeon and HOD of Forensic Medicine at Coimbatore Medical College.

The event featured a poster presentation competition where participants presented research and conceptual papers aligned with the theme. Around 855 delegates, including nursing faculty, educators, registered nurses, and healthcare professionals from across the country were attended and benefited.

Recognising the educational value of the program, the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council (TNNMC) has awarded 8 credit hours to the participants.

Organised under the patronage of L. Gopalakrishnan, Managing Trustee of PSG Institutions, the conference successfully concluded with a valedictory session, marking a significant step forward in building community-centred, compassionate healthcare systems.
