Fertility Specialists at Nova IVF Fertility, Coimbatore, are observing 3 out of every 10 patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, or thyroid problems alongside the fertility issue.

These medical conditions are directly making it harder for couples to have a child.

Male infertility is becoming a bigger concern in Coimbatore. Longer, stressful jobs, lack of sleep and exercise, poor dietary habits, and uncontrolled blood sugar may be some of the reasons why sperm quality is affected. However, most men have low acceptance.

They either delay getting tested or avoid it altogether, which can make the treatment harder. When men delay treatment, by then the woman’s age increases; thereby, the chances of using their own sperms/ eggs may decline, thus reducing their chances of having a biological child.

Thyroid-led infertility, particularly hypothyroidism, is commonly observed. 4 in every 10 women coming for fertility treatment are being diagnosed with this condition. This can impact ovulation and may also cause miscarriage in women.

Speaking about this, Dr. Meenakshi Priya, Clinical Director and Fertility Specialist at Nova IVF Fertility, Coimbatore, said, “In Coimbatore, we are seeing two problems together: more people are developing diabetes and thyroid disorders, and at the same time, infertility issues.

A serious concern is that many couples are coming to us only at the age of 40 or 45. By this time, the quality of the woman’s eggs has already reduced, and the man’s sperm health may also have gone down. This directly affects the chances of having a baby.

Couples aged 35 years must come within 6 months of being unable to conceive, and those aged below 35 must come within 1 year of trying to conceive.”

Doctors are also seeing cases where IVF treatment has failed more than once for the same couple. In many such cases, couples assume that the problem is with the woman’s uterus or eggs; however, repeated failures in IVF can be due to the embryo itself.

Dr. Latha, Clinical Director & Fertility Specialist at Nova IVF Fertility,  said, “In cases where the IVF treatment is failing repeatedly, or a couple is undergoing miscarriage, we use advanced techniques such as Preimplantation genetic testing, which helps us pick the best embryo, free of chromosomal abnormalities.

We may also use tests of the endometrium to determine when the best time is to transfer the embryo, so that the chances increase. We understand that repeated failure of IVF treatments impacts the couples emotionally, and they lose hope; hence, we try to personalise the treatment as much as possible to each couple.

Many of them are working professionals who are focusing on their careers and have delayed marriage or having children. By the time they decide to start a family, their most fertile years have already passed.

Awareness is needed on procedures such as egg freezing, embryo freezing, and sperm freezing, which can allow people to preserve their fertility while they are young and give them the option to conceive later.
