Diploma in Apiculture, Department of Zoology, Kongunadu Arts and Science College in association with Madhurum Bee Farm Gulanthaisamy Gounder Thottum, Trippur organised a hands-on training program in beekeeping, recently.

The program aimed to provide participants with practical knowledge and skills in beekeeping, emphasizing the importance of bee conservation and sustainable beekeeping practices.

The main objectives of the programme:

  1. To equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage bee colonies effectively.
  2. To promote sustainable beekeeping practices and bee conservation.
  3. To provide a platform for participants to share their experiences and learn from each other.

The training program consisted of both theoretical and practical sessions. The theoretical sessions covered topics such as bee biology and behavior, beekeeping equipment and tools, hive management and record keeping, bee health and disease management, honey production and harvesting.

The practical session includes beehive setup and maintenance, bee handling and manipulation, queen bee introduction and management, hive inspection and record keeping, honey extraction and processing.

The training program was attended by 25 students from the Kongunadu Arts and Science College with two faculty members.

The outcome of the programme:

  1. Participants gained practical knowledge and skills in beekeeping, including hive management, bee handling, and honey production.
  2. Participants understood the importance of sustainable beekeeping practices and bee conservation.
  3. Participants shared their experiences and learned from each other, promoting a sense of community and cooperation among beekeepers.
