Be Patient-Centric in your Decisions – Dr. Ragupathy Veluswamy
My journey began as a pediatrician in New Jersey, where I spent more than two decades in clinical practice. Over time, I moved into healthcare leadership, serving in senior executive roles, including Vice President of Quality and Chief Medical Officer across hospitals in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Along the way, I learned something very important: good medicine alone is not enough. We also need good leadership.
I believe the future of healthcare depends, in part, on developing more physician leaders—leaders who are competent, compassionate, ethical, and willing to take responsibility for improving the system.
Receiving this Fellowship strengthens my dedication to advancing physician leadership and management, particularly by helping the next generation of physicians develop the practical leadership skills they need to lead healthcare institutions effectively.
Returning to India in 2015 as CEO of GKNM Hospital in Coimbatore, I had the privilege of leading its transformation into a 750-bed multi-specialty tertiary care institution. Today, as India continues to emerge as a major healthcare destination, developing capable and compassionate physician leaders is more important than ever. I commit to developing physician leaders in India through practical leadership, education, and collaboration with the AAPL.
To my fellow physicians and aspiring physician executives, I offer this encouragement: never underestimate the difference you can make; continue to learn; continue to lead; and continue to place patients at the center of every decision.
