Major railway freight terminals and sidings within Coimbatore district generated an impressive total goods revenue of approximately Rs.300 crore during the 2025-26 financial year, according to a recent performance data.

Operating under the Salem Division of the Southern Railway, the district’s industrial momentum continues to climb despite a unique geographical limitation: the Salem Division notably remains the only division under the Southern Railway without its own seaport.

A closer look at the freight revenue contributors for FY 2025–26 reveals that energy and container handling are driving the bulk of the district’s logistics revenue. The Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) Siding in Irugur emerged as the undisputed leader, generating a staggeringRs.256.50 crore.

Other key contributors facilitating regional trade include CONCOR PFT, Irugur:Rs.14.33 crore; Irugur Goods Revenue:Rs.2.08 crore; Peelamedu & FCI Sidings (Combined) Rs.1.61 crore and Coimbatore North & FCI Siding (Combined):Rs.0.68 crore (Rs.68 lakh).

These figures clearly highlight the growing importance of Coimbatore as a major logistics, freight, and industrial hub for Western Tamil Nadu.

Despite these robust revenue figures, trade experts and industrial bodies emphasize that the region requires modern infrastructure to sustain long-term growth. There is an urgent call for the establishment of a state-of-the-art Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) to build an integrated logistics ecosystem that can further drive economic growth, operational efficiency, and global competitiveness.
