According to Layoffs.fyi, a tech layoff tracker and Department of Government Employees (DOGE) Layoff Tracker, over 112,700 employees have been laid off by 218 companies so far in 2025.
Big companies like Amazon, Intel, Microsoft, and Meta have carried out major job cuts. Amazon is reducing around 14,000 roles, Intel about 24,000, and Microsoft over 9,000.
The main reasons for these layoffs are the use of AI in operations and company restructuring. Many firms are shifting resources from traditional roles to focus on AI, cloud technology, and automation. This is changing the way companies work and affecting jobs globally.
Government jobs have also been affected. The Department of Government Employees reported 71,981 layoffs, contributing to a total of 182,528 federal departures in 2025.
Not only tech and government sectors, but other industries like logistics and manufacturing are also reducing staff as they adopt new technologies. Workers face both immediate job loss and the challenge of learning new skills to stay relevant in an AI-driven economy.
Experts say this trend shows that just having old skills may no longer be enough. Job-seekers and employees should focus on learning skills for the future and roles that are less likely to be automated.
As companies and governments adapt to technology and cost pressures, workers need to reskill and adapt to secure their careers in the changing job market.
