Prof. Sudhir K. Jain, an eminent academician, earthquake engineer, and Chairman of the Board of Governors at IITRAM, who has also served as Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, Director of IIT Gandhinagar, and Professor of Civil Engineering at IIT Kanpur, had a very engaging dialogue with the students of PSG College of Technology, on the topic ‘Making the Most of College Life’.
Speaking as part of the Centenary Celebrations of PSG & Sons’ Charities and the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of PSG College of Technology, Prof. Jain shared key perspectives on academic success, personal growth, and navigating career choices.
During this interactive session Prof. Jain address the challenges that are common among college students; from handling setbacks to choosing a career path, he reflected on his own experiences studying in Hindi medium before going abroad, reminding students that continuous self-improvement far outweighs initial academic standings.
“In the long run, I think I did better than that because I was hungry to improve. I wanted to learn, I wanted to keep improving. If you feel that you want to improve, you will do much better than IIT students. I can guarantee that,” he said.
While answering a question about career, he said “Your first job is always not by how much salary you are getting, but how much fun you will have, how much learning you will have. Don’t go by your first salary… You should go by where you will have fun, where you will enjoy, where you will find good people, and where you will become better.”
He affirmed that success depends on how one improve himself.
“As engineers and individuals, you should try to solve the problems that are near you. You should start to become independent, take ownership of your life, start making decisions and if they are wrong, learn from them. Always be open to learn from everyone and work hard because luck comes to those who make an effort,” he remarked.
