Vivekananda Institute of Management Studies organised a Drug Awareness Programme for the newly admitted MBA students today.
It aimed to sensitise students to the physical, psychological, and social consequences of substance abuse while encouraging them to become responsible citizens committed to a drug-free society.
Valarmathi, Principal, welcomed the gathering and delivered the Presidential Address. She emphasised that students should remain focused on their academic and career goals throughout their MBA programme and avoid behaviours that could negatively affect their future.
Stressing the importance of discipline, she encouraged students to uphold ethical values, make responsible choices, and contribute positively to society. She reminded them that education is not only about personal success but also about giving back to society through responsible conduct and meaningful service.
The Chief Guest, Sivanandan, Special Inspector of Police, Kovilpalayam, delivered an insightful address on the growing challenges posed by drug abuse among youth. He appreciated the discipline maintained by the students of VIMS and expressed his confidence that they would continue to uphold the institution’s reputation.
He cautioned students to be vigilant while staying away from home, explaining that individuals with harmful intentions may initially approach them with friendship, financial assistance, or other inducements before introducing them to addictive substances.
Highlighting the serious health consequences of drug abuse, Sivanandan explained that prolonged consumption of narcotic substances can severely damage vital organs such as the kidneys and pancreas, leading to chronic illnesses and premature death.
He also warned that tobacco consumption significantly increases the risk of oral cancer and other life-threatening diseases. At the same time, he encouraged students to show compassion towards individuals struggling with addiction and support their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
He also introduced the students to the Nizhal software, an initiative of the Police Department that enables citizens to report complaints from any location for prompt police intervention.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Rengaboss, Community Service Clubs In-charge.
