While motorists often use the underpass of the Vadakovai flyover, not many know about the subway system that exists.
The subway gives easy access to pedestrians opting to reach Cross Cut road from Mettupalayam road or R.S.Puram but it is well-used or should we say, abused by drunkards and miscreants.
It starts at Highway Department office near Vadakovai bus stand opposite to the once popular Central Theater premises. From there it forms a zig-zag route down, designed to lead the pedestrians towards Cross-cut road via a series of staircases.
The staircases are partially broken at different areas, the handrails and guardrails are rusted, the route is spoiled by garbage, liquor bottles, and all sorts of unimaginable waste. The entire subway lacks security cams. In addition to this, the absence of proper lighting in the evening hours only increases the chances of pedestrians avoiding it.
While it was said that renovation at Rs.12 crore would be made at the flyover, hope seems far for the subway’s resurrection.
