The new block is adjacent to the old one with Ground + 5 floors (60,000 sq.ft) and together with the existing block (70,000 sq.ft) we now have more than 1.2 lakh sq.ft. space. This is a large tertiary care eye center that can easily handle 1200-1300 patients per day. Previously it was 800+ per day, said Ramamurthy.

The 1st and 2nd floor both offer cataract, cornea services while the 2nd also offers oculoplasty (an ophthalmic plastic surgery related to the eye and its surrounding structures).

The 3rd floor offers refractive and lasik care and a Lasik Operation Theatre. The 4th floor houses a dedicated pediatric ophthalmology center (with 4 dedicated pediatric ophthalmologists) besides neuro, ophthalmology and glaucoma and a myopia clinic.

Besides this a children’s play area is also included in this floor. The 5th floor offers dedicated retina care and laser procedures.

The expanded facility features enhanced waiting areas, 40 consultation rooms, 60 optometry cubicles, 10 state of the art operation theaters (with 3 dedicated to cataract), 15 investigation rooms and ophthalmic labs, 40 executive inpatient rooms (inpatient services can be availed at the existing block.

A total of 100 patients can avail the service at a time), comfortable day care units, 4 optical outlets and pharmacy units and a dedicate multi-level car parking that can provide space to park 120 cars.

The campus has additional parking facilities to park 200 two-wheelers.

Dr. Ramamurthy said that once patients reach the main atrium, a team of 8 receptionists would attend them immediately to hear about their eye care requirement.

If it is a general eye test and treatment they would be sent to the existing block and if they need special care, they would be directed to the specific specialty floor.

Each floor has the entire infrastructure needed for the specialized care. This helps patient to get all the care they need in the very same floor.

The Chairman underlined that the cost of care in this new block will be the same fixed at the existing one. “Whatever we charged for procedures earlier would be applicable here. Our goal is to reach more patients through this expansion.

At The Eye Foundation, cost is not a constraint. We offer free cataract surgeries to patients, at least 15 to patients per day via Rajalakshmi Nethralaya, the charitable wing of The Eye Foundation.

“Through our own system and also with assistance from Rotary, we extend our care to the needy. Our objective is that none should leave the hospital without getting treated,” he added.
