The Tamil Nadu government has approved a new welfare scheme to provide free daily meals for sanitation workers, beginning with the Greater Chennai Corporation.
The initiative was confirmed in an official government order issued on October 23, 2025.
In its initial phase, the scheme will cover sanitation workers employed under the Greater Chennai Corporation, with plans to gradually extend the program to other urban local bodies across the state.
While the scheme was initially announced as providing breakfast alone, the final government order specifies that three meals — breakfast, lunch, and dinner — will be offered each day.
The program aims to address the difficulties sanitation workers face in arranging meals, especially since their work often begins early in the morning.
This latest initiative follows a series of welfare measures introduced in August 2025, which included enhanced death benefits, educational assistance for the children of sanitation workers, and housing support schemes.
