“Creating multiple design concepts took days, even weeks. Today, AI can generate hundreds of designs in just minutes based on the color, fabric, and current trends. The important point here is that AI doesn’t replace the designer. It gives the designer much more time to do what humans do best –being creative,” said Anand Muthusamy, Chairman, Dean Group at PSG College of Technology’s National Conference on Synergy in Fashion Industry.

Anand was speaking at the conference organized by the College’s Fashion Technology Department. The event focused on the theme – Digitalization, Sustainability, Tradition and Innovation in Fashion which according to the chief guest, forms the future roadmap of the global fashion industry.

Talking about AI’s role in assisting sustainability in Fashion and Textile Industry, he said A.I. has helped the industry to address one of the biggest challenge in the field – Overproduction.

“Every year, millions of garments are manufactured but not all are sold. That is not only a business loss, it is also an environmental loss. Today, AI analyses behavior, sales data, market trends etc., to predict demand more accurately. Companies can produce what customers are actually likely to buy, reducing waste, saving resources, and making the entire supply chain more sustainable,” he said.

Touching upon buyers’ evolving expectation, he said 20 years ago, customer asked how much this shirt cost. Today they ask who made it? Was the worker treated fairly? How much water was spent to make this product? What is the carbon footprint? Is the fabric recyclable?, etc. The industry, according to Anand, has responded to these questions through Digital Product Passport (DPP), Smart Manufacturing, Supply Chain Transparency, ESG, etc.

He emphasized that advanced technologies including Artificial intelligence will not replace people. But people who know how to use AI will have an advantage over those who don’t.

“The future belongs to people who can combine creativity with technology. So, don’t be afraid of AI. Learn it, experiment it, use it as a tool because AI can generate thousands of designs but only you can create a design that tells a story, preserves a tradition, and touches someone’s heart,” he added.

Earlier at the inaugural ceremony, Chandrasekaran, Head (i/c), Department of Fashion Technology welcomed the gathering. Thyla, Principal of the College delivered the presidential address.
