The Maldives has introduced a “generational ban” on smoking and tobacco use, becoming the first country in the world to do so. The ban took effect on 1 November 2025.
Under the new rule, anyone born on or after 1 January 2007 is prohibited from buying, using, or selling tobacco products in the Maldives. The ban also applies to visitors and tourists born on or after this date.
In addition, the Maldives has banned e-cigarettes and vaping products for all ages, including their import, sale, distribution, possession, and use.
The government says the policy aims to protect public health and create a “tobacco-free generation.” Tobacco use has been a major health concern in the country, causing early deaths from smoking-related diseases and high rates of usage among youth.
The ban covers all tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco. Retailers must verify a customer’s age before selling. Selling tobacco to anyone born on or after 2007 carries a fine of 50,000 Maldivian Rufiyaa (₹2,89,500), while using vape devices carries a 5,000 Rufiyaa (₹28,950) fine.
This is a welcoming move from the island nation to safeguard the youngsters from illegal activities.
