When Coimbatore expanded due to the plague disease, new suburbs such as R.S. Puram, Kempatti Colony, and Devangapettai were developed. Even Ramnagar, originally created for Brahmins, came to be considered a suburb. A school established in this area was initially known as the Sub-Urban School, which over time came to be called the Suburban School.
