Hindusthan College of Arts & Science celebrated International Microorganism Day 2026 on Monday at the college premises to create awareness among students about the fascinating world of microorganisms, their applications, and their importance in science and society.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Ponnusamy, Principal and Patron, and Rajalakshmi, Convener and Regional Coordinator, MBSI Society.
The celebration featured a special guest lecture, student-centred competitions, the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), and a prize distribution ceremony.
As part of the celebration, a guest lecture on “The Science and Applications of Quorum Sensing” was delivered by Jayaprakashvel, Department of Marine Biotechnology, Special Officer – Institutional Development Cell and IQAC Coordinator, AMET University, Chennai.
He explained the scientific significance of quorum sensing and its applications, providing students with valuable insights into microbial communication and its relevance in biotechnology and related fields.
Five interesting microbiology-based competitions were conducted for the students: “Taste, Identify & Discover the Microbial Magic!”, “Microbes to Market – Product Making Competition”, “Shape the Microbial World with Dough”, “Decode the Clues • Discover the Process”, and “WHO AM I? – IDENTIFY THE INSTRUMENT”.
These activities encouraged students to apply their microbiological knowledge, creativity, observation skills, and scientific thinking in an engaging and interactive manner.
A significant highlight of the celebration was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Microbiology Society of India (MBSI) and the Department of Biotechnology, Hindusthan College of Arts and Science College.
The MOU marked an important step towards strengthening academic and professional collaboration in the areas of microbiology and biotechnology. The collaboration is expected to facilitate knowledge exchange, academic activities, training programmes, workshops, student engagement, and other mutually beneficial initiatives.
Following the MOU signing, a prize distribution ceremony was organized to honour the winners of the competitions. The winners were appreciated for their active participation, creativity, scientific understanding, and enthusiasm. Certificates and prizes were presented in recognition of their achievements and contributions to the celebration.
The programme concluded successfully with the active participation of students and faculty members.
The celebration provided an excellent platform for students to explore the diverse world of microorganisms, enhance their scientific knowledge, and appreciate the importance of microbiology in contemporary science and society.
