Coimbatore is expected to receive a much-needed break from the persistent heavy rains that have lashed the region over the past several days.

While light to moderate showers may still occur through tonight and early Tuesday, weather conditions across the city and wider parts of Tamil Nadu are forecast to remain predominantly dry for the remainder of the week.

The upcoming dry spell will bring significant relief to residents following an unusually wet October, during which rainfall figures doubled the seasonal average. The city typically records an average of 17 cm of rainfall for the entire month. However, most parts of Coimbatore have received between 25 cm and 30 cm within just ten days, leading to unprecedented waterlogging and localized flooding.

Meteorological observations indicate that intense short-duration rainfall contributed heavily to the excess accumulation. Following a widespread 7 cm rainfall event last week and intermittent showers, the city experienced another severe spell yesterday, recording between 8 cm and 11 cm of rain across multiple neighborhoods.  Such consecutive, high-intensity spells are exceptionally rare for Coimbatore, typically occurring only once every four to five years.
