In a significant relief to daily commuters and long-distance passengers, Southern Railway has announced the restoration of train stoppages at Singanallur and Irugur railway stations starting from August 18, 2025.
The move comes after prolonged appeals and persistent efforts by local passengers, associations, and trade bodies.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, trains made regular halts at Singanallur and Irugur. However, post-pandemic operations saw the discontinuation of these stops, causing inconvenience to hundreds of daily commuters travelling to destinations such as Somanur, Tiruppur, Erode, and beyond.
The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, recently submitted a memorandum to Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Railway Minister, during his transit visit to the city, highlighting the plight of commuters.
Also, Passengers’ Associations from Singanallur and Irugur staged protests and submitted petitions to officials of the Salem Railway Division and Southern Railway, requesting reinstatement of stoppages for key trains, including the Coimbatore–Nagercoil, Nagercoil–Coimbatore, Palakkad–Trichy, and Trichy–Palakkad services.
Responding to these demands, Southern Railway has officially confirmed the inclusion of stoppages at Singanallur and Irugur for the aforementioned passenger trains. This development has been welcomed by residents, daily travellers, and businesses in the region.
While expressing gratitude for the new train halts, the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, has also urged railway authorities to enhance passenger amenities at both stations.
The demands include the construction of raised platforms, foot overbridges, toilets, entry and exit roads, and dedicated ticket booking facilities.
“As Coimbatore city is expanding rapidly towards the eastern corridor, it is essential that infrastructure at stations like Singanallur and Irugur be upgraded. Improved facilities will not only ensure commuter convenience but also boost public adoption of rail transport, contributing to the Railways’ overall revenue,” the Chamber stated.
