Whenever the Christmas season arrives two things often come to adults’ and children’s minds, the one is Santa Claus and the other one is Plum Cake, so why Plum cake has become famous for Christmas?
Earlier in Europe, people celebrated the winter solstice (when half of Earth has tilted far away from the sun, which usually happens on December 21 or 22) as a feast with sweetened bread which is made up of ingredients like honey and dried fruits. Later, this early tradition, combined with the Christian festival and celebrated as Christmas.
In medieval times, plum porridge (a mixture of meat broth, oats, and dried fruits) had become the main Christmas dish. As time passed, porridge evolved into a plum pudding, containing sugar, spices and dried fruits.
After, the arrival of baking methods, the pudding changed to cakes which we have now. Therefore, this is the reason why plum cake is popular for Christmas.
