The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore (ICCIC), on behalf of its members representing the region’s industrial and business community, has welcomed and expressed its gratitude to the Supreme Court of India for its timely directions aimed at strengthening road safety across the country.

The Chamber noted the Court’s concern that national highways account for a disproportionately high number of fatalities and appreciated its emphasis that expressways must not become “corridors of peril”.

It said the directives, including a ban on the parking of heavy vehicles on highways, implementation of Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), and identification of accident-prone blackspots, are both timely and essential.

The Chamber also welcomed the Court’s reiteration of the Right to Life under Article 21, which places responsibility on authorities to ensure safe road conditions. It said the constitution of District Highway Safety Task Forces and the setting of strict enforcement timelines reflect the urgency of the issue.

Further, it termed the direction to remove unauthorised roadside dhabas, eateries, and commercial establishments within highway safety zones a significant step towards reducing accidents caused by unsafe roadside activities.

While welcoming these measures, the Chamber emphasised the need for effective and time-bound implementation by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the National Highways Authority of India, and state authorities.

The Chamber reiterated its appreciation to the Supreme Court and expressed confidence that these directions will significantly enhance road safety and help save lives.
