January–February: Maha Kumbh 2025

The Maha Kumbh 2025 became one of the largest religious gatherings in history, with over 660 million (66 crore) devotees participating in the bathing rituals over its 45-day duration. The event drew attention worldwide for its scale and spiritual significance.

March: Champions Trophy Victory

India won over New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy 2025 on March 9. At the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, captain Rohit Sharma’s 76-run innings guided India to chase 252 runs, securing the prestigious title with a 4-wicket win.

April: Pahalgam Terror Attack & Pamban Rail Bridge

On April 22, a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, shook India as militants opened fire on unarmed tourists in the scenic Baisaran meadow. Several visitors lost their lives, highlighting ongoing security challenges.

In contrast, April 6 marked a historic infrastructure milestone with the inauguration of the new Pamban Rail Bridge in Tamil Nadu. India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Ram Navami, replaced the century-old bridge and enhanced connectivity in the region.

May: Operation Sindoor

In response to the Pahalgam terror attack, India launched precision strikes under Operation Sindoor on May 6–7 targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Missiles hit nine locations, including Bahawalpur, a known base of the banned outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed, signalling a strong stance against cross-border terrorism.

June: Air India Flight Crash

On June 12, Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after departing Ahmedabad for London. Only one of the 242 passengers and crew survived, and 19 lives were lost on the ground. Investigations revealed that engine fuel switches were unintentionally cut off, highlighting human error amid critical circumstances.

On June 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chenab Bridge in Jammu & Kashmir, the world’s highest railway arch bridge. Part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, the bridge significantly improves connectivity in Kashmir, boosting tourism and economic growth.

July: Trump’s 25% tariff

July saw rising trade tensions between India and the US, after President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports, effective August 7, citing trade imbalances and India’s reliance on Russian energy and defence equipment.

August: Landslide

On August 26, heavy rainfall triggered a landslide near Ardhkuwari on the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route, killing 34 devotees and injuring several others.

September: 2-slab GST system

The government introduced a simplified two-slab tax system of 5% and 18%, replacing the previous four-slab structure. A special 40% rate was applied to luxury and sin goods.

October: Record-Breaking Diwali Sales

Diwali 2025 witnessed record-breaking sales of ₹6.05 lakh crore (approx. $68.7 billion), driven by goods (₹5.40 lakh crore) and services (₹65,000 crore).

November: Red Fort Blast

A car bomb blast near Delhi’s Red Fort on November 10 killed at least 11 people and injured more than 20. The incident was classified as a terrorist attack and is under investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), raising concerns over urban security.

December: IndiGo Flight Disruptions

The year ended with major air travel disruptions as IndiGo faced operational challenges. Over 5,000 flights were cancelled across eight days in the first week of December, leaving passengers stranded at airports.
