The Rotary Clubs of Coimbatore Centennial, Meridian and East, in association with Gem Cancer Centre, jointly organised a cancer awareness programme at Gem Hospital on Saturday.

Dr. Madhu Sairam, Senior Radiation Oncologist at the centre, delivered a talk on “Is Cancer Really Preventable?” He highlighted breast cancer and cervical cancer, emphasising the importance of regular screening, including Pap smear and mammogram tests. He stressed the need for early detection and explained the four stages of both cancers. He noted that when diagnosed in the first two stages, these cancers are easier to treat and have a higher chance of cure.

Dr. Bharath Rangarajan, Senior Medical Oncologist at the centre, spoke on “Curing Cancers: Why Does Stage Matter?” He elaborated on the causes of cancer, the significance of staging, and the various treatment methods available.
Following the programme, mammogram and Pap smear screenings were conducted for eligible women at highly subsidised rates. The mammogram was offered at ₹1,000 and the Pap smear at ₹250, compared to their usual costs of ₹3,000 and ₹1,250, respectively.
