The Department of Science and Humanities of Hindusthan College of Engineering, hosted an insightful talk on the topic “How to Read a Newspaper” on 10th October 2025.
The session aimed to assist students develop the habit of reading newspapers effectively and meaningfully, fostering knowledge, awareness, and analytical thinking among young learners.
The guest speaker, Sathish Kumar, Regional Head, Sales & Distribution, Admin, The Hindu Newspaper, Salem shared valuable insights drawn from his expertise in communication, media literacy, and education.
The speaker stressed that a newspaper is a valuable tool for intellectual and personal growth rather than just a compilation of daily news items. He went into detail on the skill of reading newspapers critically, which includes interpreting news beyond the headlines, evaluating the reliability of sources, creating well-rounded viewpoints, and examining article structure.
Along with emphasising the value of differentiating factual news from opinions and editorials, the lecture urged students to develop their reading skills in an age of information overload.
The seminar demonstrated through hands-on activities and real-world examples how reading newspapers regularly may greatly improve vocabulary, comprehension, and overall awareness.
The speaker also encouraged students to regularly read opinion and editorial pages in order to improve their language skills and critical thinking.
The session proved to be an inspiring and thought-provoking experience for everyone present. It gave almost 300 students the tools to read more critically and with greater comprehension, in addition to inspiring them to make reading a regular habit.
