The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP), Coimbatore Branch, in association with the Department of Pediatrics, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (PSG IMSR), observed National Basic Life Support (BLS) and CPR Day under the theme “CPR Saves Lives” on July 25, 2025, at the PSG IMSR Auditorium.

The program aims to create awareness of the importance of early recognition and timely intervention during cardiac emergencies. The event includes demonstrations and hands-on training on high-quality chest compressions, effective rescue breaths under the guidance of trained instructors.

Before the event, a press meet was held and it was addressed by Dr. Arun Samuel, Lecturer in Simulation, PSG IMSR; Dr. Jayavardhana, Professor and Head, Department of Pediatrics; Dr. Murugananthan, Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics and AHA Instructor; and Dr. Mohan, AHA Coordinator.

The speakers emphasised that cardiac arrest can occur suddenly in both adults and children, and immediate action can mean the difference between life and death. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a simple yet vital skill that helps maintain blood circulation to the brain and heart during emergencies, buying crucial time until professional medical help arrives. Studies show that prompt CPR can double or even triple the survival rates of cardiac arrest victims.

They further explained that in children, cardiac arrests often result from respiratory issues, and effective CPR can help reverse hypoxia and prevent irreversible brain damage. In adults, sudden cardiac arrest is often linked to heart disease, where timely chest compressions and rescue breaths can help restore a life-sustaining heartbeat.

“Unfortunately, many bystanders hesitate to act due to fear or lack of knowledge,” they stated. “Training in CPR empowers individuals to act confidently and quickly, ensuring that every second counts in saving a life, whether it is a child choking or an adult collapsing suddenly.”

The speakers emphasised that by spreading awareness and training more people in CPR, we can create a community ready to respond effectively during emergencies, thereby making our society safer.
