The Maha Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, which is being held every 12 years once. This year, 2025, marking another 12th year, the Maha Kumbh Mela commenced on January 13 in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
The Mela is an extraordinary event of faith, spirituality, and devotion, celebrated by Hindus in India. It happens in four rotating sacred locations: Prayagraj (Confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers), Haridwar (River Ganges), Ujjain (River Shipra), and Nashik (River Godavari).
During the festival, millions of devotees, including saints, sadhus, and pilgrims, gather to take a holy dip in the sacred rivers associated with each location.
This year’s Maha Kumbh is especially significant due to its alignment with rare celestial configurations that occur once every 144 years, amplifying its spiritual importance and drawing unprecedented numbers of pilgrims.
It is believed that during this sacred period, taking a dip in the holy water cleanses all sin, purifies the soul and helps to attain moksha.
The Maha Kumbh Mela apart from being a spiritual festive, it also been recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
This spiritual event ends on 26th February 2025.
