Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) recently hosted “KMCH Liver Nutricon 2026,” a comprehensive one-day international conference focused on nutritional interventions for liver, pancreatic, and gastrointestinal diseases.

The event served as a major scientific forum, bringing together national and international experts to share knowledge on specialised dietary practices.

A key highlight of the conference was the official launch of the “KMCH Liver Diet”. This innovative dietary plan was specifically developed to address the growing burden of Steatotic (fatty) liver disease and the nutritional deficiencies often faced by patients with liver failure or chronic liver disease, for whom a standard diet is typically insufficient.

KMCH Liver Diet

The KMCH Liver Diet is the result of extensive collaborative research between the KMCH Liver Transplant team and the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at KMCH and Dr NGP Arts and Science College.

The diet was developed based on clinical research to ensure it provides the precise macronutrients and micronutrients required to improve patient well-being and to overcome liver health issues.

Designed specifically for this geography, the plan utilizes easily available and affordable ingredients, ensuring that the therapeutic diet is accessible to the public. The dietary recommendations are primarily vegetarian, making them easy to adopt within local food habits.

The conference featured technical sessions led by experts in Liver, Gastroenterology and nutrition, from leading national and international institutions of repute, attracting 300 participants, including dietitians, doctors, and students from Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, and Palakkad.

Discussions centred on the critical role of medical nutrition therapy in managing complex conditions of the liver, pancreas, and bowel.

Dr Nalla G Palaniswami, Chairman of the hospital expressed that the conference was the need of the hour with the growing magnitude of Steatotic (fatty) liver disease and opined that by introducing this specialized diet, KMCH aims to provide a structured, scientific approach to nutrition that helps to prevent Steatotic (fatty) liver disease and to support the long-term health of patients undergoing liver treatment and transplantation.

In a concluding message, Dr. Arun N Palaniswami, Executive Director of the hospital, encouraged continued collaboration to redefine the standard of care for those facing acute and chronic organ dysfunction through the power of targeted nutrition and rehabilitation.
