During the Vijayanagara Empire, members of the Balija community worked in the army and were also engaged in money-handling and financial settlement activities. They were known as Oppanakaarars (those who settled or handled money).
As many Balija families involved in these money-settlement activities settled in this area, the street came to be known as Oppanakara Veedhi (Oppanakara Street).
