In 1903, a fast-spreading plague disease in Coimbatore caused many deaths, forcing people to leave their homes and move to safer places. As the city was crowded and had poor sanitation, expanding the city became necessary.

The City Council then bought several hundred acres of land between Mettupalayam Road and Thadagam Road and divided it into housing plots. It was developed as a residential area and later named after Rathinasabapathy Mudaliar, the Chairman of the Coimbatore Municipality.

Over time, the name ‘Rathinasabapathypuram’ was shortened to the well-known name ‘R.S. Puram.
