Hindusthan College of Arts and Science (HICAS) announced the achievements of its students at the Handloom Fashion Show Season 07, held on August 22, 2024, in collaboration with Makkal Seva Mayam and Dream Zone to celebrate National Handloom Day.

Our standout participant, R. Visithra from the Department of Costume Design and Fashion, excelled in the competition, earning the esteemed title of “Kaithari Rani.” Her innovative design, a beautiful fusion of Handloom Khadi fabric and machine-woven materials, showcased a striking blend of traditional and contemporary aesthetics. The garment was further enhanced with crocheting details and fabric painting, reflecting the diverse traditions of India’s 29 states. This project was a collaborative effort by her class, completed over 20 days, highlighting the dedication and creativity of our students.

In addition to Visithra’s individual success, our college achieved second place for the highest number of participants. This accolade was proudly received by Dr. R. Sucharitha, Head of the Department of Costume Design and Fashion.

This success underscores the potential for commercialization of handloom products, which could greatly enhance the visibility and market presence of the handloom sector. Hindusthan College is committed to supporting this important industry through our annual handloom exhibition, which aims to promote the skills of weavers and celebrate traditional craftsmanship.

In the face of challenges from fast fashion and evolving consumer demands, it is crucial to preserve and innovate within our traditional crafts. While government initiatives play a key role, it is through individual and collective efforts that we can drive significant changes and promote the handloom sector.
