GEM Cancer Centre, a unit of GEM Hospitals, celebrated its first Rose Day on 20th September 2025, with the theme “Vallamai Thaarayo,” aiming to motivate cancer patients and raise awareness in society that cancer is not a dangerous disease.

Over 100 cancer patients, both those currently undergoing treatment and those who have completed it, participated in the event. They inspired fellow patients to stay confident, continue treatment, and believe that they can overcome the disease.

Karthikeyan, Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Dr. Palanivelu, Chairman of GEM Hospitals, presided over the event. Dr. Praveen Raj, CEO, along with Jaya Palanivelu and Prabha Praveen Raj, also took part and inaugurated the program.

The chief guest launched a Free Mammogram Campaign for eligible women above 40 years at GEM Cancer Centre. He also inaugurated the hospital’s dedicated Onco-Support Group for cancer patients. The free mammogram screenings will be conducted from 5th to 31st October 2025.

In his address, Dr. Palanivelu urged people to view cancer as a treatable condition rather than a dangerous one. He emphasized that ignorance is worse than disease and highlighted the importance of early cancer screening. He stressed that focusing on prevention can significantly reduce the cancer burden in society.

Dr. Praveen Raj remarked that cancer today is like any other disease; if left untreated until advanced stages, it can lead to fatality. He encouraged people to remain health-conscious, undergo regular checkups, and seek timely treatment with courage and confidence. He noted that the medical advancements in cancer treatment today are phenomenal.

He also highlighted that GEM offers advanced cancer prevention programs inspired by the WHO model. These checkups include simple tests to detect early signs of cancer risk, similar to routine master health checkups, helping adults stay ahead of potential health threats. He appealed to everyone to spread the message: “Prevention is better than cure.”

In his address, Karthikeyan shared that medicine alone is not enough to overcome cancer—courage and confidence are equally vital. He appreciated the patients present for their boldness and willingness to undergo treatment.

Earlier, Dr. Bharath Rangarajan, Director of GEM Cancer Centre, welcomed the gathering. Rtn. Madhana Gopal, a noted orator, delivered a motivational speech. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Shivakumar, Head of Surgical Oncology.
