FICCI FLO Coimbatore launched “Vruksha”, a large-scale urban afforestation initiative using the Miyawaki method, at the Karamadai Railway Station in collaboration with Southern Railways, recently.
Under the project, about 8,000 native saplings will be planted to create a dense, self-sustaining green ecosystem aimed at reducing pollution, conserving water and improving urban biodiversity. The afforestation drive was inaugurated in the presence of Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division, Panna Lal (IRSE), Southern Railway Women’s Welfare Organisation (SRWWO/SA) President Gayatri, Secretary Lipika Mondal, Chief Staff and Welfare Inspector S. Dhanalakshmi and local police officials.

Students from SSVM Vidhan Matriculation School actively participated in the plantation drive, adding youthful enthusiasm to the event and highlighting the importance of environmental responsibility among the younger generation.
Speaking on the occasion, Aparna Sunku, Chairperson of the FICCI FLO Coimbatore Chapter, said the “Vruksha” initiative represents a commitment to future generations, emphasising the need to plant today for a greener and healthier tomorrow.
The project is being spearheaded by Sharmila Gupta Malay, Head of the Environment and Sustainability Vertical, and Hema Khona, Project Chair. Organisers said the initiative aims to create a lasting green legacy while strengthening collaboration between civic bodies, educational institutions and the community in environmental conservation efforts.
