In observance of World No Tobacco Day, GKNM Hospital organized a comprehensive awareness program aimed at educating support staff and workers about the harmful effects of tobacco use and the importance of leading a tobacco-free life.
Around 50 participants, including construction workers, housekeeping staff, engineering department personnel, kitchen workers, chefs, and nutrition department staff, actively participated in the interactive awareness session. The program provided an opportunity for attendees to engage directly with medical experts and gain valuable insights into the health risks associated with tobacco consumption.
The session was led by Dr. Sivanesan, Chairman of the Department of Oncology, Dr. Senthilkumar, Consultant Pulmonologist, and Dr. Mahesh Mitra, Head of the Department of Physiotherapy at GKNM Hospital.
Addressing the gathering, the doctors highlighted the alarming health consequences of tobacco use, including its role as a major cause of various cancers, respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and other life-threatening conditions. They explained how tobacco addiction affects individuals and families, emphasizing the importance of prevention, early intervention, and cessation support.
The speakers also discussed the causes and risk factors associated with cancer, particularly tobacco-related cancers, and shared practical guidance on quitting tobacco and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The interactive session encouraged participants to ask questions and clarify misconceptions about tobacco use and its long-term impact on health.
The program concluded with a strong message encouraging all attendees to become ambassadors of a tobacco-free society by spreading awareness among their families, friends, and communities.
