Access Life Assistance Foundation launched its new centre at Gandhi Nagar, Nanjundapuram Road, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu recently marking its 10th anniversary.
The centre provides care for children battling cancer with free accommodation, nutrition, and transport for children up to age 14 and two family members. The foundation also provides multidisciplinary supportive care to families who come to Coimbatore for their child’s cancer treatment.
Every year, over 75,000 children in India are diagnosed with cancer. Families travel from remote towns and cities across the country to metropolitan areas seeking treatment for their children. While hospitals offer quality medical services, many underprivileged families struggle to find accommodation during the 5-12 months (sometimes extending to 24 months) required for treatment.
Some families abandon treatment due to the high cost of accommodation in metropolitan cities. Children fighting cancer, without proper accommodation and nutrition, are five times more likely not to survive due to secondary infections, chemotherapy intolerance, and treatment abandonment.
Childhood cancer is curable when diagnosed early and managed properly in facilities with the necessary infrastructure.
Access Life Assistance Foundation is the first pediatric cancer care centre of its kind in Coimbatore. This centre features 13 units capable of housing 13 families, benefiting a total of 39 individuals (one child and two caregivers).
The foundation is associated with Kovai Medical Hospital, GKNM Hospital, and PSG Hospital and aims to accommodate more needy families as required.
Access Life offers children and their families an interim hygienic home that provides these brave hearts with a better chance in their fight against cancer. They also strive to improve their quality of life by providing counselling support services, educational resources, and recreational programs.
Access Life set up its first Centre in June 2014 in Mumbai and has grown to 9 childhood cancer care Centres across Mumbai, Pune, Manipal, Chandigarh, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Coimbatore. Through the 9 Centres, the centre has offered holistic support to more than 2100 underprivileged children with cancer, and their families.
