The Retailers Association of India (RAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kumaraguru Institutions on January 5, 2025, marking a collaboration aimed at strengthening retail education and industry engagement.
The event was presided over by Shankar Vanavarayar, President, and witnessed the participation of students, educators, and industry representatives.
The MoU was signed by Shankar Vanavarayar and Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO, RAI, and Lawrence, Director – Retail Learning and Member Relationship, RAI.

The MoU focuses on initiatives such as hands-on training programmes for students and industry professionals, research and knowledge workshops to connect academia with industry practices, and support for startups in the retail sector. The partnership aims to enhance skill development and practical exposure for students.
Delivering the keynote address, Kumar Rajagopalan emphasised the importance of technology adoption in the retail sector and highlighted the role of retail in driving economic growth.
Addressing the gathering, Shankar Vanavarayar referred to RAI as a platform for young entrepreneurs to convert ideas into business opportunities and encouraged students to begin their entrepreneurial journey without delay.
A panel discussion featured industry experts including Palanisamy Vanjimuthu, Business Director, Boomerang, who spoke on experiential learning and technology adoption, and Hari Nandhini of Hay, who stressed the importance of brand commitment and authenticity in retail.
A fireside chat with Kumar Rajagopalan outlined five key points for students and academia: preparing students for real-world retail challenges, encouraging deeper engagement with retail beyond textbooks, shifting from passive consumption to active contribution, adopting technology, and promoting cross-sector collaboration.
During the event, RAI launched ProtoSem under the Phygital Retail and Intelligent Commerce (PRIC) initiative, a 20-week talent development programme focused on retail strategy, design thinking, and digital technologies through a challenge-based learning approach.
RAI also presented its annual plan, detailing objectives related to training, research, and startup support across India.
Students set up stalls showcasing handmade products and retail concepts, which received a positive response from visitors.
Deepesh, Principal, welcomed the gathering, while Sangeetha, Head of the Department, KCT B-School, proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was organised and coordinated by Balu, Associate Dean, School of Management.
