Rtn. Govindarajan, President of the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Centennial, the Founder-Chairman and Director of the Centre for Development and Environmental Research (CDER), and the former Head of the Department of Economics at Bharathiar University, addressed Rotarians on the topic “Indian Economy in the Global Perspective” recently.
The talk was organised by the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Meridian at Hotel Heritage Inn.
Rtn. Govindarajan traced India’s economic development since Independence and highlighted the challenges faced over the decades. He noted that the country’s macroeconomic fundamentals remain strong, with agriculture and manufacturing serving as key strengths in achieving a GDP growth rate of 6.5%.

Placing the discussion in a global context, he stated that the Indian economy has now emerged as the world’s fourth largest and has built a healthy foreign exchange surplus. However, he also pointed out ongoing challenges such as employment generation and rural infrastructure development, which, he said, should be given priority in the years to come.
Rtn. Radhakrishnan Subramanian, President of the Meridian Club; Rtn. Sridhar Kalyanaraman, Secretary; Rtn. Mohanakrishnan, Chairman – Vocational Services; Rtn. Tamilselvan, Club Administration, and members of both the Centennial and Meridian clubs participated in the session.
