The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched a revamped online portal to register and microchip both pet and stray dogs in the city.
The initiative aims to streamline dog population control, track vaccinations, and encourage responsible pet ownership.
Starting October 8, pet owners will be required to register their dogs through the portal and ensure they are implanted with microchips. The move makes microchipping mandatory for obtaining dog licences in Chennai.
Officials said the data collected will help manage stray dog populations more effectively, track sterilisation and vaccination, and reduce the risk of rabies outbreaks.
