The Community Service Club at Vivekananda Institute of Management Studies (VIMS) organised “Cyber Smart: An initiative on Cyber Safety” on August 29, 2025.
Valarmathi, Director, extended a warm welcome to the gathering and addressed the students on the crucial need for cyber safety awareness in today’s digital era. In her address, she emphasised that with the rapid growth of social media usage, young people must exercise caution and responsibility while engaging online.
She urged the students not to disclose excessive personal information or share photographs indiscriminately on social media platforms, as these practices can expose them to unnecessary risks.
She also reminded them that every individual has a moral duty to voluntarily spread awareness about safe online practices among their family members, peers, and the community at large.
The Resource person, Rajesh Krishnan, Chief Executive Officer of 4Socio, highlighted a concerning trend among children and adolescents—that many hesitate to open up about their personal problems to parents or teachers due to fear of judgment or punishment.
Instead, they confide in their friends, who may not always possess the maturity, knowledge, or courage to guide them appropriately. This gap often leaves children vulnerable to exploitation in the digital space.
Rajesh further elaborated on the various forms of cybercrimes, including online harassment, identity theft, cyberbullying, and misuse of personal data, explaining how these issues affect young users.
As part of the CYBERSMART initiative, each student of Vivekananda Institute of Management Studies was assigned the responsibility of educating at least five children, including their own siblings, about the importance of cyber safety, responsible internet usage, and preventive steps against cybercrimes.
