Rtn. Govindarajan, President of the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Centennial, Founder-Chairman and Director of the Centre for Development and Environmental Research (CDER), and former Head of the Department of Economics at Bharathiar University, addressed Rotarians on the topic “Indian Economy in the Global Perspective” on December 9, 2025.
The talk was organised by the Rotary Club of Coimbatore East at the Rtn. Sanjeevi Kumar Business Centre, Ramnagar.
Rtn. Govindarajan traced India’s economic development since Independence and highlighted the challenges faced over the decades. He noted that the country’s macroeconomic fundamentals remain strong, with agriculture and manufacturing serving as key pillars in achieving a GDP growth rate of 6.5 percent.

Placing the discussion in a global context, he said that the Indian economy has now emerged as the world’s fourth largest and has built a healthy foreign exchange surplus. However, he also pointed out continuing challenges such as employment generation and rural infrastructure development, which, he said, should be accorded priority in the years ahead.
Rtn. Vijay Krishnan, President of the Rotary Club of Coimbatore East; Rtn. Selva Kumar, Secretary; Rtn. Venkatesh, Chairman – Club Services; and members of the club participated in the session.
