The 91st Annual General Body Meeting of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore (ICCIC), was held on 21st July 2025 at Chamber Towers, Avinashi Road, Coimbatore.
The office bearers present included Rajesh B. Lund, President; Dorairaj, Natarajan and Annamalai, the Vice Presidents; Pradeep and Karthik, the Honorary Secretaries; and Kailash Kumar, Treasurer.
Rajesh B. Lund read out the annual report, and each department head also presented the report on their department’s performance over the past year. Past presidents of the chamber and members attended the AGM.
Resolutions Adopted at the 91st AGM
Civil Aviation
The Chamber resolved to continue its advocacy for:
- Expansion of the existing runway at Coimbatore International Airport.
- Designation of Coimbatore as a Hub-and-Spoke Airport.
- Installation of additional Customs counters.
- Expansion of the arrival and departure terminals and construction of additional aircraft parking bays.
- Immediate construction of an interim arrival terminal and a dedicated international enclosure by the Airport Authority of India.
- Inclusion of Coimbatore International Airport as a point of call in the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) with ASEAN countries.
- Reinstatement of Coimbatore’s point of call status in BASA for UAE (Dubai)-based carriers to enable direct international flights.
Railways
Key resolutions included:
- Increasing the number of platforms at Coimbatore Junction from 6 to 8, with relocation of the coaching depot and pit lines to Peelamedu.
- Construction of two island platforms at Coimbatore North Railway Station.
- Development of state-of-the-art maintenance facilities in Peelamedu with 6 pit lines and a coaching depot, and restoration of 2 pit lines at Mettupalayam.
- Implementation of two pit lines with a 24 LHB coach capacity at Podanur, and planning of pit lines at Pollachi.
- Expedited completion of the Amrit Bharat Station Redevelopment Program at Mettupalayam, Coimbatore North, Podanur, and Pollachi.
- Quadrupling of railway lines from Jolarpettai to Coimbatore and onwards to Shoranur.
- Increasing the Vande Bharat Express (Chennai service) to 16 coaches.
- Preponing the Bengaluru-bound train departure to 5:45 AM.
- Introduction of new trains to Mangaluru and Thiruvananthapuram, and overnight trains to Hyderabad via Bengaluru and Vijayawada via Chennai.
- Jan Shatabdi Express from Nagercoil to Coimbatore via Madurai and Palani.
- Immediate restoration of discontinued trains to Rameswaram, Sengottai, Madurai, and Dindigul (stopped for gauge conversion), and restarting the Coimbatore–Salem MEMU.
- Increasing frequency of tri-weekly service for weekly trains such as Kongu Express to Delhi, Chennai, Rameswaram, Tirunelveli, Rajkot, and Hisar.
- Extension of the Coimbatore–Pollachi Express to Madurai, and the Tiruchendur–Palakkad Express to Mettupalayam.
Metro Rail
The Chamber urged both the Central and State Governments to approve, fund, and implement the Coimbatore Metro Rail Project.
Road Infrastructure
Resolutions in this sector included:
- Expansion of the Coimbatore Bypass Road (Neelambur to Madukkarai, 27 km) into a six-lane expressway with flyovers at key intersections.
- Construction of long-pending bypasses at Karamadai and Mettupalayam.
- Immediate approval and implementation of flyover projects at Saravanampatti, Singanallur, and Sundarapuram.
- Completion and opening of the Avinashi Road Elevated Corridor, including early inauguration of finished up-ramps and down-ramps.
- Revival of the Lawley Road Flyover Project.
- Allocation of approvals and funding for Phase II and III of the Coimbatore Western Bypass.
- Approval and funding for a flyover from Goldwins to Neelambur by the Government of Tamil Nadu.
- Widening of the 100 km corridor from Mettupalayam to Pollachi (via Annur, Karumathampatti, Somanur, Karanampettai, Kamanaickenpalayam) into a six-lane road with flyovers.
- Expansion of the Thudiyalur–Saravanampatti–Kalapatti–Neelambur road into a four-lane highway.
- Upgrading of the Cochin Frontier Road into a four-lane road.
Taxation
The Chamber recommended the establishment of an Area Bench of the GST Tribunal in Coimbatore once the tribunal is formed, to address regional issues effectively.
Agriculture
The Chamber stressed the importance of long-term solutions for the farming sector, beyond temporary relief like loan waivers. Key suggestions included:
- Construction of gated dams and bridges every 5–6 km across rivers to connect farming villages on both banks.
- Establishment of an integrated wholesale market in Coimbatore district to benefit the entire Kongu region.
Electricity
The Chamber strongly urged the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) to remove network charges on solar energy across all consumer categories.
IT Sector
The Chamber called for a thorough evaluation of the government’s broadband policy, particularly in terms of connectivity, coverage, quality, and adoption in rural and indigenous areas.
Water & Urban Development
It also stressed the need for desiltation of the Siruvani River and urged the State Government to set up adequate sewage treatment plants.
Additionally, the Chamber reiterated its demand for the formation of the Greater Coimbatore Development Authority to plan and manage urban growth effectively.
The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore, said that it will actively follow up and represent all these resolutions to the respective government departments and authorities to ensure progress and implementation.
